In the first instance, we extend to you the hand of friendship from the
President of Rotary International, Bhichai Rattakul and his wife, Charoye.
They would dearly love to be with you this weekend. You know there are
over 530 Rotary Districts in about 162 countries – the Rattakul family try
to visit many of these but knowing you are a strong district President,
Bhichai has asked us to be with you today. |
まず最初に、ＲＩ会長 ビチャイ・ラタクル氏・チャロイご夫妻に代わってご挨拶を申し上げます。お二人ともこの週末、皆様と一緒にこの場所に集うことを切に願っておりました。しかしご存知のように約162カ国に530以上のロータリー地区がございます。ラタクルファミリーは出来るだけ多くの地区を訪問したいと考えています。しかしあなたが強力な地区ガバナーであると考えて、ビチャイ氏は今日ここに私達を代理として遣わしました。 |

It is an honour for us to visit you, Governor Kojima Satoshi and your
active Rotarians supported by their families. It is an honour firstly
because we respect Japan as an ancient country that the world appreciates
and values. It is also because we know that this Rotary District has had a
fine set of leaders who over about 14 years have made the district one of
the best in the Rotary world of service. |
小島哲ガバナーをはじめ、ご家族様に支えられた熱意のある会員の皆様を訪問出来たことを光栄に思います。また、世界に評価されている、古の国、日本を訪問することが出来て、大変嬉しく思います。また貴地区の素晴らしい指導者の皆様が過去14年以上にわたりロータリーの奉仕活動で最も優秀な地区を維持して来られたことを誇りに思います。 |

bring to you the best wishes from the Rotarians of Tasmania led by our
District Governor, Bob Sydes. We are a small district of about 1600
Rotarians, but we too use service to be leaders in our community. |

| Tasmania
is an island south of the mainland of Australia. Tasmania is shaped like
an apple and for many years we were known as “The Apple Isle” because
we grew and exported many, many cases of wonderful apples. Around the
apple orchards we also had some pear orchards. Today Tasmania is best
known for its forest trees, its minerals (iron ore, copper, zinc, tin) and
the production of aluminium because of our plentiful supply of electricity
from hydro-electric plants. Tasmania is a small island – only 87%
the size of Hokkaido, for instance with a population just less than half a million
people. |
タスマニアは、オーストラリア本土の南に位置しています。リンゴの形をしていて、長年上質のリンゴを大量に生産し、輸出してきたので、「リンゴの島」として知られています。リンゴの果樹園の周囲にはナシの果樹園もあります。今日タスマニアは森林と鉱物（鉄鉱石、銅、亜鉛、錫）、そして水力発電所から豊富に電力が供給されるためにアルミニウムの精錬で知られています。タスマニアは北海道の８７％の広さしかなく、ちなみに人口は50万人に満たない島です。 |

President Bhichai has given us the theme,
Sow the Seeds of Love
in Rotary to assist us in our service endeavours. The theme during my year
as Governor was “Enjoy Rotary!” [1989/90]. I’m sure you all try to
enjoy your Rotary service as I do. In 1985/86 I was Club President of
North Hobart and the theme then was – “You are the Key”. The world
President from Australia who really started the Health, Hunger and
Humanity programs [3-H] was Clem Renouf, and his theme was, “Reach Out”. |
ビチャイ会長は私達の奉仕への努力を支援するために「慈愛の種を播きましょう」というロータリーのテーマを提示下さいました。私がガバナーを務めた1989-90年度のテーマは「ロータリーを楽しもう」でした。皆様も私と同様ロータリーを楽しもうとされていることと信じて疑いません。1985-86年度、私がノースホバートロータリークラブの会長だった時のテーマは「あなたが鍵です」でした。健康・飢餓・人道プログラム〔３−Ｈ〕を実際に始めたオーストラリア出身のＲＩ会長クレム・ルノルフ氏（1979-80）のテーマは「手をさし伸べよう」でした。

You are well aware of the Presidents of Rotary International from Japan –
Kyoshi Togasaki (1968-69) gave us the wonderful single word theme –
PARTICIPATE! I remember when the President, Hiroji Mukasa (1982-83)
came to Tasmania – his theme was – “Mankind is One -- Build Bridges of
Friendship Throughout the World.” |
皆さんよくご存知の日本出身のＲＩ会長東ケ崎潔氏（1968-69）は「参加し敢行しよう」という素晴らしいテーマを下さいました。また向笠広次ＲＩ会長（1982-83）がタスマニアに来られた時のことをよく覚えています。彼のテーマは「人類はひとつ−世界中に友情の橋をかけよう」でした。 |

Another Australian President was Glen Kinross and his theme was, “Show
Rotary Cares”. Still another Australian President of Rotary International,
Royce Abbey had a theme and it said, “Put Life into Rotary – Your Life”. |
もう一人のオーストラリア人の会長はグレン・キンロス氏（1997-98）で、彼のテーマは「ロータリーの心を」でした。また別のＲＩ会長ロイス・アビー氏（1988-89）のテーマは「ロータリーに活力を−あなたの活力を」でした。 |

like to think that the words we say or write can be powerful. They can
inspire others – think of some of your great poets or teachers or even
politicians or your parents - - - sometimes their words make us take
action. Let me put some of the above themes together and combine them with
President Bhichai’s theme … |

In our daily lives let us REACH OUT to those in need as we SHOW
ROTARY CARES. We know too that the inspiration to do good in
the world by our club members should be a personal philosophy of life,
therefore PARTICIPATE and PUT LIFE INTO ROTARY – YOUR
LIFE. In this challenging world for the young, for the homeless, and
for those with health and personal needs, Rotarians, YOU ARE THE KEY
as you SOW THE SEEDS OF LOVE. |
私達の日常生活において、ロータリーの心を示すために困っている人に手を差し伸べましょう。私達のクラブの会員の手で世界に奉仕を行うという発想は我々個人の人生の哲学とすべきものだと思います。ですから、参加しましょう。そしてロータリーに活力を注ぎましょうーあなたの活力を。
若者、ホームレスの人々、健康面で或いは個人的な援助を必要とする人々には厳しいこの世の中で慈愛の種を播くときに、ロータリアンであるあなたが鍵なのです。

President Bhichai is a practical man. His wife, Charoye supports him in
his profession. Bhichai has asked us to do little things – employ the
disabled and improve the sight of those for whom a simple, cheap operation
would make the world of difference. But first we must discover the needs
in our own communities – even our own families. We must build from the
bottom – form a strong foundation and build up. |
ビチャイ会長は実践的な方です。チャロイ夫人は仕事でも彼を支えています。ビチャイ氏は、身体障害者を雇用したり、視力の悪い人に、簡単に安価で出来る手術を提供したりする様な小さな事を私達に依頼されています。こういう小さなことが世界を変えるのです。しかし、まず私達自身の地域、家庭において何が必要なのかということを見つけなければなりません。我々は足元から、すなわち、強い基礎と骨組みから築き上げていかなければなりません。 |

am a practical person and I believe we often forget the members in our own
club. To care for our own members and their families is of the highest
priority. |
私も実践的な人間です。私達は自分のクラブの会員のことは忘れがちです。自分のクラブの会員やその家族の事を心配することが一番の優先です。 |

Let’s think about hungry people as an example. Firstly … are there any
hungry people living in your community? Have you asked? Do you know? If
the answer is YES, then those people need your assistance first. Once we
know about even one hungry person, as Rotarians we MUST take
action. That is SERVICE ABOVE SELF in action. In Rotary we also
know that, in this example, supplying one meal is not enough – with
dignity for the person, we must offer long term solutions that may include
employment and housing as well as the basic problem of food. |
例えば飢えている人々の事を考えてみましょう。あなたの地域にどれだけ飢えている人がいますか？尋ねた事がありますか？知っていますか？もし答えがＹＥＳなら、その人たちはまずあなたの援助を必要としています。一人でも飢えている人がいるとわかったらロータリアンとして我々は行動を起こさなくてはなりません。それこそが超我の奉仕なのです。ロータリーではこのような場合、一度の食事を提供するだけでは充分ではなく、個人の威厳を尊重して、基本的な食料の問題はもちろん、雇用や住居の問題を含む長期的な解決策を提供しなければならないことはご承知のとおりです。

As a Rotarian, YOU are the person who can bring these people hope.
By motivating yourself and your club, you can answer the many calls for
help echoing throughout the world. |
ロータリアンとしてこのような人たちに希望をもたらすことができるのはあなたです。あなた自身やクラブが強い使命感を持つことにより、世界中からの助けを求める声に答えること出来るのです。

Rotarians – there are very basic issues in the world that we can address.
Some may be: poverty, homelessness, literacy, unemployment, major health
issues, youth leadership and more. As Rotarians we do not
have to solve ALL the problems, only those we can do well.

世界にはロータリアンが取り組むことができるとても基本的な問題があります。例えば貧困、ホームレス、識字、失業、主な健康問題、そして青年のリーダー育成等、多々あります。ロータリアンとして全ての問題を解決する必要はないのです。私達が出来ることだけでも良いのです。

Lastly, I must say that for Rotary’s future we must inform the public more
actively about our work. In the past we have been a “silent” service
organisation. Why? We should be proud of our work and in a professional
way inform every community the positive differences we make to people’s
lives. |
最後になりましたが、ロータリーの将来のために我々の仕事について公衆の人々にもっと知ってもらわなくてはなりません。かつて我々は陰徳を旨としていたことがあります。何故でしょう？我々は我々の活動に誇りを持つべきです。そして我々が人々の生活をいかに改善したかということを職業的な方法でそれぞれの地域に知らせるべきだと思っています。 |

Thank you for welcoming Shirley and me to your Rotary community and to
Japan. Your District Governor has been very generous already – however I
must mention that Past Trustee of The Rotary Foundation, Frank Nakajima
has visited our home when he was in Tasmania many years ago representing
this district with a Group Study Exchange team. We have met several times
since and I admire his continuing work for Rotary. I am well aware that in
this district Rotarians and their families believe and practice that
Mankind is One – as you Build Bridges of Friendship Throughout the
World. |
私共夫婦をロータリーの集いに、そして日本にお招き頂きありがとうございます。貴地区のガバナーは我々にとても親切にして下さっています。またパストロータリー財団理事のフランク中島氏も何年も前にグループ研究交換（ＧＳＥ）の皆さんと一緒に貴地区を代表してタスマニアに来られた時、私共の家庭を訪問下さいました。以来私たちは何度かお会いしており、彼のロータリーに対する絶え間ない奉仕活動を尊敬申し上げております。
貴地区の会員様、及びご家族の皆様が
「人類はひとつ −
世界中に友情の橋をかけよう」というテーマを信じて実践されていることを信じて疑いません。
